Your client's builder gel hasn't lifted.
The cuticle area still looks clean. The product is firmly attached to the natural nail.
But somewhere along the side of the nail, there's a crack.
Sometimes it's tiny. Sometimes it travels further into the enhancement. And sometimes the client comes back with the entire corner of the nail missing.
The immediate reaction is often:
"This builder gel isn't strong enough."
Maybe.
But sidewall cracking isn't automatically a sign that you need a harder or thicker product.
When a crack repeatedly appears in a particular area, the location itself can tell you something about what the nail is struggling to withstand.
Why Do Builder Gel Nails Crack at the Sides?
The sides of the nail, particularly around the stress area, play an important role in the overall strength of the structure.
As the nail gets longer, everyday pressure on the free edge creates leverage.
Think about what happens when someone pushes a button with the tip of a long nail, reaches into a bag, catches the nail on clothing or simply uses their hands throughout the day.
That force doesn't disappear.
It travels through the nail.
If the structure doesn't adequately support the areas experiencing that stress, cracking can occur.
That's why a nail can look beautiful from above and still have structural weaknesses.
1. Too Much Product Was Filed Away From the Sidewalls
This is one of the first things I'd investigate.
We all want nails that look slim and elegant.
But there's a difference between refining the shape and filing away necessary support.
If you repeatedly file deeply into the sidewalls to create a narrower-looking nail, you can weaken the structure around an area that already experiences significant stress.
The finished nail may look beautifully thin from above.
Then two weeks later, a crack appears exactly where that support was removed.
This is particularly relevant when creating almond, coffin and other tapered shapes.
You can't simply keep removing material from the sides indefinitely and expect the nail to maintain the same strength.
Shape and structure have to work together.
2. The Structure Doesn't Match the Length
A short natural nail and a long nail don't need identical reinforcement.
As length increases, so does leverage.
Imagine holding a short pencil between two fingers and pushing against the end.
Now imagine doing the same thing with a very long pencil.
The longer object creates greater leverage.
Nails behave similarly.
If a client decides to grow their natural nails significantly longer but you continue applying the builder exactly as you did when they were short, the old structure may no longer provide enough support.
This doesn't mean the entire nail needs to become thick.
It means the architecture needs to make sense for the length.
3. The Apex May Be Incorrectly Positioned
The apex isn't just a fashionable bump nail techs learned to photograph from the side.
It has a structural purpose.
Its placement and size should help distribute the forces placed on the nail.
If the apex is too far forward, too far back, too flat or inappropriate for the nail's length, stress may not be distributed effectively.
That can contribute to weak points elsewhere, including around the sidewalls.
And as the natural nail grows, the position of the structure changes.
A beautifully balanced manicure at week one isn't structurally identical at week four.
That's one reason regular maintenance matters.
4. There Isn't Enough Product in the Stress Area
When nail techs learn to create thinner, more natural-looking enhancements, there's sometimes a temptation to make everything thin.
But natural-looking doesn't mean uniformly thin.
A well-structured nail has different amounts of product in different areas for a reason.
If the stress area lacks sufficient reinforcement, repeated pressure can eventually create cracking.
The answer isn't necessarily to make the whole nail thicker.
The answer is to put the appropriate amount of product where the nail needs support.
That's a very different thing.
5. The Builder Gel May Be Too Flexible for the Length
Flexible builder gels can be fantastic for natural nail overlays because they can move with the natural nail.
But product flexibility needs to make sense for the service you're performing.
A product designed primarily for flexible natural nail overlays may behave differently when used to support significantly longer nails.
As length increases, you may need different structural properties.
This is why choosing a builder gel based only on colour or how nicely it self-levels isn't enough.
Ask what the product was actually designed to do.
A beautiful flexible builder may be ideal for one service and completely wrong for another.
6. Or the Product May Be Too Rigid
Naturally, because nails apparently refuse to make troubleshooting convenient, the opposite can also create problems.
Some natural nails are extremely flexible.
If the natural nail bends significantly while the enhancement sitting on top of it is very rigid, the two materials aren't necessarily moving together.
That mismatch can contribute to separation, cracking or breakage under repeated stress.
This is why "harder = stronger" is an oversimplification.
The strongest product on paper isn't automatically the best product for every client.
Compatibility between the natural nail, the product and the service matters.
7. The Client Has Outgrown the Structure
Sometimes there was absolutely nothing wrong with the original manicure.
It was properly structured.
It lasted beautifully.
And then the client decided to stretch their appointment another week.
As the natural nail grows, the entire enhancement moves forward.
The apex moves forward too.
Eventually, the structure that was originally designed to distribute pressure efficiently isn't sitting in the same position anymore.
The longer the nails are, the more important this can become.
This is one reason maintenance schedules shouldn't be based exclusively on whether the manicure still looks acceptable.
A client may look at four weeks of growth and think:
"They're still attached. I can get another week."
Structurally, you may have a different opinion.
8. The Natural Nail Has Changed Shape Underneath
Natural nails don't always grow perfectly straight.
Some grow downward.
Some curve.
Some twist slightly.
And the shape can become more pronounced as the nail gets longer.
During a fill, simply placing more builder gel over the existing structure without evaluating the natural nail underneath can gradually create an unbalanced enhancement.
Sometimes corrective filing or restructuring is necessary rather than endlessly stacking new product onto old architecture.
A fill shouldn't mean blindly filling the gap near the cuticle.
You should still evaluate the whole nail.
9. The Nail Shape May Be Working Against the Client
Not every shape performs equally well on every natural nail.
We've discussed this with clients before: one person may wear short square nails for weeks without a problem, while another repeatedly loses corners.
Change that second client to a softer oval or almond shape and suddenly retention improves dramatically.
That's not magic.
Natural nail shape, lifestyle, length and the forces placed on the nail all influence how well a particular shape performs.
This doesn't mean clients can't wear the shape they love.
But sometimes expectations or structure need to be adjusted accordingly.
10. Everyday Habits Can Create Repeated Sidewall Stress
If the same nail cracks in the same place repeatedly, start asking questions.
Which hand?
Which finger?
What does the client do for work?
Does that nail repeatedly hit something?
Do they type with the tips of long nails?
Do they open packages with them?
Does the index finger always crack while the other nine nails return perfectly intact?
Patterns matter.
If nine nails consistently survive four weeks and one index finger keeps cracking, replacing your entire builder gel system may be a slightly dramatic response.
Investigate what makes that nail different.
Should You Just Apply Builder Gel Thicker?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the easiest traps to fall into.
Nail breaks.
Add more product.
It breaks again.
Add even more.
Eventually the client has a small architectural monument attached to each fingertip and you're still not addressing the underlying problem.
Thickness and strength aren't synonymous.
Where the product is placed matters.
The shape matters.
The apex matters.
The length matters.
The product characteristics matter.
The client's natural nail matters.
Good structure is strategic, not simply thick.
How Can You Prevent Sidewall Cracking?
Instead of treating every crack as an isolated accident, look for patterns across appointments.
Evaluate the nail from multiple angles before applying product.
Choose a product appropriate for the client's natural nail and desired length.
Build enough support through the stress area without creating unnecessary bulk.
Be careful not to remove that support again during filing.
Reassess the structure at every fill instead of simply filling the growth area.
And consider whether the client's preferred shape and length are realistic for their natural nails and lifestyle.
Most importantly, document what happens.
If you've changed something and the client returns with better retention, you've learned something useful.
Is It a Product Problem or a Technique Problem?
It can be either.
If the same product performs beautifully on short overlays but repeatedly cracks when you use it on significantly longer nails, you may be asking that product to do something it wasn't designed for.
That's a product-selection issue.
If several different products crack in exactly the same place on nails you've shaped and structured the same way, changing products repeatedly probably isn't going to solve much.
That's when technique deserves a closer look.
And if only one client's right index finger cracks every month while everything else survives beautifully?
You probably don't need to throw your builder gels into the garbage.
Troubleshooting isn't about assigning blame.
It's about finding the pattern.
A Crack Is Information
One of the most useful skills a nail tech can develop isn't simply knowing how to create a beautiful fresh set.
It's learning how to read the nails when the client comes back.
Where did the product lift?
Where did it crack?
Which nails were affected?
How long were they worn?
How has the structure changed?
A damaged enhancement can tell you a surprising amount about what happened during those weeks.
Instead of seeing a sidewall crack and immediately reaching for a thicker builder gel, use it as information.
Sometimes you need a different product.
Sometimes you need more support.
Sometimes you need to change the shape.
And sometimes your client needs to stop opening cans with their nails. We can build impressive things with gel, but apparently not indestructible household tools.
